Event Details

ELSA is organising a series of guided tours around the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand WC2.

Normally these public tours cost £10 if you apply directly to the court but we are offering them completely FREE to ELSA members - your m'ship status will be checked!

Non members may join ELSA for £5 each - payable on the day of the visit

The tours will last approx 1 hour and will take place on the THIRD Wednesday of each month.

The first tour this year will be on Weds 20th January.

ABOUT THE RCJ

The Court is fairly large and very impressive architecturally. Even if you weren't studying law, it would be an interesting building to visit. The guide will give you a brief history of the building and its position in the courts hierarchy, then you will be led around the building pointing out features of interest. The guide will also be happy to do a Q&A session although, please understand that they are not lawyers so don't ask too many overly technical questions. At the end of the tour, providing that it is not sitting in private, you will be able to sit in the back of a court to watch a hearing taking place. If you do decide to sit in a hearing, please remember to be very quiet as you must under no circumstances disturb the judge.

COURT LISTINGS

The Royal Courts of Justice are also known as the 'High Court' or 'Courts of Appeal'. If you wish to know which cases / causes are listed to be heard at the RCJ, you may find them  here.

The Big Question: Do juryless trials risk obscuring the transparency of justice?

Further dates & times will be:

WEDNESDAY 20 January - 10 & 11am
WEDNESDAY 17 February - 10, 11 & 2pm
WEDNESDAY 17 March - 2.15 pm

Each tour lasts about 1 hour. Please register on this page for your preferred tour time. Once all places are allocated, it will no longer be possible to register. There are a maximum of 25 places available for each time slot.

COST

FREE for current ELSA members

JOINING ELSA

If you wish to join ELSA please request a membership application from here

* Can't Make Wednesdays?
If you want to visit the RCJ on a guided tour but cannot make Wednesdays, then you may book a tour yourself directly through the court. The court charges £10 per person to participate in these tours but you do have a much wider choice of dates.

RED LIST

Please note that if you fail to attend, once you have taken a place, you will be placed on the ELSA Red List. Thereafter, you will not be allowed to register for any other ELSA event. This may seem harsh but too many people book for events and then do not have the decency or manners to cancel or they cancel so late that there is no opportunity to offer their place to someone else. Their selfish actions deprive others of the opportunity to participate and also cause problems for ELSA with the courts, which jeopardises future visits.

ELSA London

ELSA London was formed in February 2005. We are an independent, intercollegiate, not-for-profit, non-political Association of London Law Students. ELSA London is an inclusive association – we welcome under- and postgraduates, UK and international, full-time and part-time students. ELSA London does not discriminate on the grounds of race, gender, religion or sexual orientation. In particular, we encourage membership from those who have an international outlook or those who are interested in improving the world around them by becoming active citizens. ELSA (pronounced like the girl’s name) believes strongly in the protection of human rights and we encourage law students to become pro-active in this field by undertaking pro bono or voluntary work placements with human rights NGOs. We also support and promote the work of different human rights organisations and student societies as we believe that collaboration and co-operation is the way forward when human resources are spread so thinly.

ELSA London was the first intercollegiate association of law students. We welcome members from any of the 20+ law schools in London. Our aim in 2005 was to try to break down the barriers which exist between law students studying at different institutions and between postgraduates and undergraduates or between UK and international students. We believe in networking, in collaborating, in sharing information and opportunities. We hope that the networks we build whilst studying in London will be strong enough to survive into employment – wherever in the world that might be!

As well as gaining a further insight into legal issues within a wider, international context, ELSA London organises visits to courts, parliament, and the EU institutions. Our purpose is to add value to that which is studied at our law schools by enabling our members to participate in – and to organise! – extra curricular activities.
